BOIS D’NIRVANA

2003-04

The Bois d’Nirvana series comprises nine large-scale digital prints that explore the ongoing attempt to understand the process of aging and the initial stages of memory loss. Created in France during a sabbatical, this body of work was deeply influenced by personal circumstances—specifically, the period following my mother's small stroke, which marked the beginning of her memory loss.

These prints remain rooted in the tangible world and present time, serving as a meditation on the progression of aging. The imagery often draws upon natural elements; for instance, I considered the tree branches depicted in the work as metaphors for dendrites—structures in the brain that are essential for memory and cognition. Through this visual analogy, the series offers a contemplative reflection on the changes that occur within the mind and body as one ages.
